AlunaGeorge consists of Aluna Francis and George Reid.
This UK based duo brings back the Aaliyah based vocals fused with the future R&B/Hip-hop pop sound that the UK is becoming huge for.
Specifically, Aluna’s voice is that soft Aaliyah/Jhene Aiko/Cassie type of vocals that lightly cut through – never too strong, and never too weak; just enough for the ears. Because of this, the music surrounding her can have anything it wants to beef up the sound.
George’s original take on this song was fast with it’s vox cut-ups, acoustic guitar at heart, piano, and flickered with a synth horn to make a true pop song.
This is where Ta-Ku comes in.
From Australia, Ta-Ku has used his J. Dilla influences to create emotive textures that are deep in orchestration techniques.
Here, he slows it down just enough to get you head bobbing along until he slams it all in your face; fast. The turn he puts on the song using the “ooo’s” to lead you into the 1:24 moment is perfect. Once the turn happens, the song mutates and moves forward with more aggression than the original ever had.
You know you’re listening to a Ta-Ku remix because the drums make sense, are vibrant, layered, full, and deep; he’s really figured everything out with the drums (nod to J.Dilla for sure).
It’s probably for this reason why he can transfer from simple drum sounds into “juke” style drums halfway through the song to really get you dancing and moving. Ta-Ku is notorious for emotive soundscapes that still sound fresh, new, and vibrant.
