California based Sophia Black debuted through i-D magazine with 2014’s “Vibrations”. August 21st, 2015 saw the release of Sophia Black’s self-titled EP.
Each song flows like a summer drive to the beach. Calm and cool, her sound is familiar yet also entirely unique and on its own.
The middle track of the EP, “mizu”, is perhaps the most interesting of the set. Staggered and staccato vocal samples intermingle with smooth guitar chords to set an entrancing vibe.
Sounds pan left and right, and the track quickly swells to drop into a smooth groove. Like Drake’s “Marvin’s Room”, the beat sucks you in as Sophia Black’s voice settles in to take listeners for a ride. The lyrics “why do you keep me waiting, swimming in my emotions” bend and weave through the ambience that is Sophia Black’s smoky voice.
Her vocal flow is as impressive as it is effortless.
The song peaks around 2:19 as enveloping synths bubble over, eventually ending with panning coos that fade the track away. If this 5-track EP is any indication of what’s to come from the young musician, we’ll definitely be hearing more from Sophia Black in the near future.
