A worldly track by definition, Swedish producer Kasbo remixed the Australian Vance Joy’s hit single, “Riptide”, resulting in music to our global ears.
Keeping much of the original’s acclaimed lyrics intact, Kasbo’s version slows things down a touch for added effect. Starting at a peaceful cadence, the track brings in Joy’s characteristic croon over a supremely airy drumbeat.
Giving the vocals plenty of room to sail, the song swells into a melodic Goliath of a track with the words “I was scared of dentists and the dark/I was scared of pretty girls and starting conversations” echoing in Joy’s trademark indie howl.
As synths wrap and warble, cutting straight through to the gut feeling of the original, the remix’s liberating sentiment pulls adds a touch of light to the original’s haunted lyrics. After the first audio mountain the song lulls, giving time to breathe before it’s back and at it again with even greater vigor.
All in all, rarely does a remix so distantly depart from the original, stylistically, yet preserve the same air feeling throughout. The juxtaposition of Joy’s lamented lyrics with the outright energy and release of Kasbo’s production style makes for something truly special.
