The Link Between EDM, the Supreme Court, and Gay Rights

The United States Supreme Court made a landmark ruling that will forever change the fabric of America. Although divided in a 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court ruled that same-sex couples can now marry nationwide in the United States. In a historic victory for gay, civil, and political rights – all citizens are truly equal when it comes to marriage.

It’s sad to see that it’s taken so long for America to get to this point, but at least we’re finally here.

Truthfully, today’s monumental ruling made us want to take a moment and thank you personally. Why? Because as a collective whole the electronic music scene and rave culture has always been an open, unbiased, and infinitely loving place. A place for friendship, care, and love.

In place of the bigotry and hatred that’s exhibited in many parts of the world you exemplify peace, love, unity, and respect. Even if you weren’t there for the blossoming of rave culture and the electronic music scene (not many of us were), you’ve helped to propel and perpetuate the loving community vibe to keep it alive today.

With each and every smile, hug, and conversation – you’ve helped to create an open space where people are free to be themselves.

In rave culture, every single person is accepted for who they are. Everyone.

For some people that may not resonate on a profound level because they’ve never had to hide themselves from the world. That’s great; that’s how it should be. For others, however, the EDM community may be the only place where they can let their guard down and throw up their freak flags in flying color.

Nobody sums up better than 28-year old Tony Renello on Insomniac’s blog:

“I have gotten nothing but love, a sense of freedom, unity and overall support from everyone. I have met many other gay men and women in the scene and have talked with people that have come out due to the support they received from the scene.

The people inside this community care for one another and only want to help each other walk the path of life, which the world can make brutal at some points. The PLUR motto makes raves a place where anybody can go and not worry about showing their true colors for fear of judgment…

I met my boyfriend Gerard last year. We have a lot of the same interests, one of them being electronic dance music. Being a gay man inside the rave community, I had no fears about showing my love for Gerard in front of anyone, because I did not feel judged. I act exactly how I want to and show him the love he deserves to be shown. I am not worried about people’s reactions at raves like I am at times in the real world, because I know that our safety is sound when we are around our rave family.”

It’s a beautiful thing; a culture that needs no hatred and knows no boundaries for love.

Rave culture is incredible, inspiring, and enlightening. Recently, it has also created an avenue for social change on a level that many of us may never have pondered through the proliferation of dance music.

The global explosion of EDM has created a massive venue and global platform for cultural exchange. Not only in the sense of countries and nationalities, but in philosophies as well. With each and every person that is exposed to the music, love, and community in the electronic music scene they will undoubtedly osmose bits and pieces of our culture. As rave culture continues to grow, so will recognition and acceptance of its ideals.

As EDM has seeped into the mainstream lexicon, so will its tenets.

This has happened before during cultural revolution of the 1960’s. As the 60’s counterculture showed us, music can serve as a coalescing force and common ally to bring likeminded individuals together to change the world. By giving a venue to share our collective voices, music can truly change the planet for the better.

So, while we’re absolutely psyched about the Supreme Court’s ruling supporting nationwide same-sex marriage, we’re also happy to know that this is already an integral part of our electronic subculture.

Thanks for keeping it that way.
