Bonanza was impressively large, and organized for just it’s second year.
This perfect dynamic of a three-day music festival had a variety of aspects that make it unique and wonderful. Not only because they have a great mix of music genres from EDM headliners to jam bands to old school hip-hop music, they also have a great variety of food trucks, booths for shopping, campsites scattered around the campground like tiny villages, and beautiful art installations.
Musical artists this year included Odesza, Duke Dumont, Nas, Lauryn Hill, Nick Murphy (Chet Faker), Jai Wolf, Big Wild, Cut Copy, Slow Magic, Method Man & Red Man, Cherub, Chet Porter and many many others.
Every day and night was an adventure in the mountains. I did not attend the first-ever Bonanza last year, but I was told that this year’s was much bigger and more popular. You could definitely tell that most of the people that were at Bonanza were there to see Odesza and the “dreamy” side of indie electronica.
After seeing them for the first time I understand why. The Seattle duo did not disappoint. From my perspective, as a photographer, I really appreciated their attention to artistic detail. Their stage design had a balanced layout to it. The mainstay were the two drummers (Clayton Knight, Harrison Mills) which are the founding members of Odesza.
For certain songs they added a guitar player between them and saxaphone and trumpet player on each end of the stage, changing the number of people from 2 to 5 people but always keeping it balanced. The stage had visually artistic elements to it that were great to shoot with. I noticed that their lighting set included a majority of schemes that made the people on stage into dream-like silhouettes.
You could rarely see their faces due to the bright LCD screen backdrops and lights coming from behind them to shine out at the crowd. It was a beautiful stage throughout the night.
We forward to watching Bonanza Campout continue to grow, see you next year.
