Kieran Hebden AKA Four Tet is a legend in the UK music scene.
A pioneer in the post-dubstep, purple, IDM, trip hop music scenes, Four Tet has remixed an extensive catalogue including a who’s who of taste-making musicians.
A collector, curator, and label owner of unique music, Four Tet is known for being able to combine any genre into a set.
“BACK2THESTART” brings back memories of Four Tet’s earlier work. The track moves, tugs, and pulls to create movement throughout the song as opposed to Four Tet’s usual minimal grooves.
Creating the track in late 2014, Four Tet described how he made the track via an interesting tweet.
It’s mind-boggling to realize that today’s musicians create complete (and beloved) tracks on a plane, but the fact pops up more and more each and every day.
Four Tet begins the track using shakers and the repeated vocals, “let’s pretend”. As soon as it becomes hypnotic, Four Tet sprinkles in additional percussion to the beat as a 2-step snare helps the track form its shape. The slow build up that makes you want to listen more intently, and it pays off handsomely in the end.
Right at the 0:52 mark Four Tet executes the deepest bass that you’ll ever hear, and it wobbles all the way into your soul.
It exemplifies the unique UK post-dubstep sound employed by Jamie xx, Burial, Hymph Mango, Joy Orbison and James Blake.
Just when the groove settles in, Four Tet pulls out the vocals so you can sit inside the bass and enjoy the percussion. Suddenly, a male voice appears. However, this is Cheryl Cole’s “Fight For This Love” pitched down and expanded.
From this point on Four Tet lets the vocals play, somersaulting over each other to push the track onward. There’s even a bit of Ellie Goulding’s “The Writer” hidden in the vocals. Four Tet expertly creates a track that expands and crescendos into the perfect groove.
