Carl Cox Shines Light on Gospel Music During Sunday Vinyl Session

Carl Cox transmitted himself into our homes this weekend for a soulful Sunday set. Exploring old records on his vinyl rig, Cox introduced a piece of 1986 into his mix with a Barbara Mitchell record, ‘Can’t Help The Way That I Feel’. Although this release by Mitchell is a punchy disco track perfect for a house music revival, Barbara holds roots in gospel music with songs like, ‘This and That’.

Similar to vocals in a lot of house music, Barabara Mitchell‘s vocals hit the soul, alluding to a deep connection between spirituality and electronic music. After discovering a gospel connection during Carl Cox’s Cabin Fever Sunday Session the question arose, does religious music influence electronic music? On the surface a rave may seem like a dark place where people throw religion out the window, but mixes like Carl Cox’s say different.

Even though techno and other styles of electronic music dive down a darker path it is prevalent glimmers of light, like Barabara Mitchells vocals, shine through, eluminating a beautiful synergy of religion and electronic music. This religious connection can be seen is other pockets of dance music, like Cercle events at cathedrals and temples as well as notorious venues like The Church in Denver, Colorado.
