This year, Ultra Music Festival is celebrating 20 years of being at the front line of electronic dance music in the United States. The festival will be returning to Bayfront Park in Downtown Miami on March 23, 24 & 25. With over 100 artists already on the bill, a phase 3 lineup is still yet to be announced. While catching the classic artists like Carl Cox, Maceo Plex, Sasha & John Digweed, Paul Oakenfold and Eric Prydz is essential, it is always important to explore the entire festival. Across 9 official stages from RESISTANCE‘s Carl Cox Mega Structure and Arcadia Spider to A State of Trance‘s curated stage, there will be countless artists to discover.

To tell the story of Ultra Music Festival, Ultra TV created 4 episodes to showcase the festival’s progression.
In 1999, the first edition of Ultra Beach Music Festival was hosted on the sands of Collins Park in Miami Beach. 20 years ago Ultra was just a small gathering to culminate the Winter Music Conference.
Episode 1: The Beginning
In the early 2000s, US laws made it very difficult for large electronic music gatherings to take place. Therefore, DJs skipped the US entirely on their tours, except for Ultra in Miami, making the event one of the only places in the States where electronic music enthusiasts could revel in international acclaim dance music in one place.
Episode 2: Dance Music Arrives
Accompanying social media and radio broadcasting around electronic music, the unique subculture began to rapidly expand. Hence, adjustments of the festival had to be made, like adding multiple days and more stages. During this time of increased popularity, Carl Cox vowed to keep the underground sacred within the festival. Now the mainstream was mingling with the hard core ravers…
Episode 3: Growth and Expansion
After 2010, several trends happened at once, making electronic music explode in the United States. For one, DJs began to arise out of the underground culture. Second, streaming live from festivals became commonplace, making it clear the whole world was watching. Finally, the division of the mainstream and underground electronic music allowed both scenes to develop independently, but still feed off each other.
