With all walks of life, individuals tend to gravitate towards those with similar interests or with other features similar to their own. In the electronic music world, it’s no different. While festival grounds may sometimes reflect a high school cafeteria with segregation and status, there is a very strict science behind the sub-grouping cliques of the EDM world, especially among the ladies.
To help break down these gal genres and to help you get an idea into where you fit in, we’ve devised a list of the different, and very individualized, EDM female cliques.
The Flower Power Princesses
“Flower Power” may be been a slogan that was used in the ’60s and ’70s, but it’s still prominent in the electronic music community today. As a symbol of a non-violence ideology and passive resistance, “flower power” encompasses the same characteristics of our EDM slogan of “PLUR.”
With these loving similarities, there’s no confusion as to why flowery hippie-lovers roam festival grounds across the nation, most commonly identified by the iconic flower headband, high-waisted denim, and casual crop tops. Spreading smiles, love, and positive vibes to other festival goers, this crowd is a guaranteed good time with zero drama.
The Gloving Girls
Lighted gloving girls are a sure thing at electronic music festivals, especially after the sun sets.
As reported by LA Weekly, gloving can be traced back to the “early days of breakdancing.” This lasting trend of rave light shows is still killing it in the EDM scene and it’s even better we’ve got some banging beauties in on it. If you’re feeling frisky, find one of these LED ladies and snag a show. You won’t regret it.
The Shoulder-Show Babes
Talk about the best seat in the house.
These liftable ladies sure to get prime-time seats. Usually accompanied with a tiny tank or a teeny bikini, these ladies are sitting high on the shoulders of some generous fans, soaking in the scenery with their hands stretched high to the sky. Behind these women is no place you want to be. While creating the ultimate view for themselves, they may hinder the views of fans within a 5-foot radius. YOLO, right?
The Camped-Out Cuties
This is why we’re so careful when walking the festival grounds. You know what we’re talking about, those groups of grass-sitting fans who camp out in the middle of nowhere, between stages. These camped-out cuties are picking a spot and they’re not moving. Maybe they want to catch the sounds of multiple stages, or maybe they’re exhausted from all-day dancing.
Perhaps they just choose festivals as their designated social outing. Either way, without a doubt, we’re sure to see these seated sirens at every festival, just lounging the music away.
The Kandi Queens
PLUR: who better to speak of peace, love, unity, and respect than a bodacious babe dripping in kandi? We can’t think of anyone better! According to Club Glow, kandi “has come to represent a kindness that brings the rave community closer by being a conversation starter that can double as a gift.”
Kandi originated as beaded bracelets garnished with personalized designs and wordings. The kandi queens of the festival are not only stocked up on some pretty intricate kandi, but they also usually have a unique outfit to go with.
The stereotypical kandi queen comes equipped with the kandi neck pieces, kandi headgear, kandi spirit hoods, and a whole heap of neons. Check out one of the most iconic kandi queens (Molly Casa) pictured above.
The Backstage Beauties
It’s all about who you know to be a backstage babe. Whether it’s an artist, an engineer, or a promoter, these gals exercise the who’s who in getting the ultimate hookup. These are excellent girls to befriend, if backstage is your goal. These girls know how to get it by poppin’ bottles with the best of them.
While they’re easy to spot, because these girls are, well, backstage, you can also probably spot them in their over-dressed attire. A backstage babe typically dresses to impress. If she’s got heels on, she’s probably kicking it backstage.
The PLUR Girls
As we’ve discussed, PLUR stands for (P)eace, (L)ove, (U)nity, and (R)espect. While the message of PLUR asks us all to practice and celebrate passion, compassion, and care, some can take it a step further. The PLUR girls tend to take it a few extra steps further.
While we’re not going to go into detail about these ladies’ lifestyle, take a moment to familiarize yourself with the picture above so you can spot the PLUR girls at your next festival.
The Crowd-Surfing Cuties
These girls live to party, and they don’t care what you think. Crowd surf to the front of the crowd? Done deal. If you’re standing in the crowd and you encounter one of these floating beauties, go ahead and give them a boost. You’ve just been graced by a partying goddess.
The Front-Stage Raver Chicks
These girls come with a purpose and you better not get in their way. Front-stage females intend on camping out in front of every crowd and they’re there for the long haul. These hand-raising ladies usually travel in packs used to create rave-walls at crowd fences to ensure a front-row view to all the action. These ladies are hard to spot outside of their natural habitat (front stage), as they come in all shapes and sizes and can belong to a number of cliques.
These are good girls to make friends with, as you’re sure to always have a good spot with an excellent view.
The Go-Go Dancing Divas
A festival simply wouldn’t be the same without these limber ladies. The go-go dancers of festivals across the world help to provide us with skilled entertainment for the full festival experience. Equipped with lavish costumes and captivating moves, these ladies help to transform any ordinary stage into a magical wonderland. Without these lovely ladies, festivals just wouldn’t be the same.
So here is to you ladies.
While you are at it be sure to check out why EDM simply would not be the same without women.
