Aside from booking a space at a place like Factory51 events venue, one of the most difficult decisions you’ll have to make as a bride-to-be is deciding between hiring a band or a DJ. While most people nowadays generally choose a DJ over a band, this might not be your preference. After all, a band brings a certain atmosphere that you wouldn’t normally get with a DJ. There are many other considerations that you have to make before you make your final decision and we’ll touch on the most important points below. Read on for more.
Figure out your playlist:
Bear in mind the type of music you want to play at your wedding. For instance, if you’re really into Top 40 pop music or banging the latest tunes, then you should consider a DJ because there aren’t many bands that can perfectly replicate a Top 40 hit set. But, a DJ can download and play any of the songs you request and they’ll sound just the way you remember them.
You can even open the floor up for guest requests and a DJ will be able to fulfill their every wish. Whereas a band might know the odd extra tune but may not be able to pay every single song you request. In fact, most bands can only play popular songs from the last 20 to 30 years and they struggle with newer tunes.
Many bands are willing to learn new songs or they’ll play pre-recorded songs for your special dances if necessary. However, they’ll charge you extra if it’s something particularly difficult to learn or has intricate harmonies for them to figure out. Generally, most reception bands are willing to learn a few songs for you but, if your entire playlist makes up only 20% of their repertoire then perhaps might want to consider hiring a DJ.
Price:
Depending on the caliber of the DJ, how experienced he is, and what kind of services are involved, you can expect to pay a few thousand dollars for the night, especially if they’re going to provide additional services such MC-ing or doing a slideshow for the night.
On the other hand, you can expect to pay about $500 or more per band player if that’s your preferred route. The total amount will depend on the size of the band and how long you’re hiring them for. Generally, a jazz band will cost less than a large string quartet.
Space:
Keep in mind that you’ll need a large amount of space to fit a band whereas a DJ only needs a relatively small working space. A band has to bring their equipment to the venue, including drums, guitars, a PA system etc.
Try before you buy:
Before you choose a band, listen to them first. There are many websites where you can listen to multiple bands in the same place. Once you settle on one, ask them for an example of the wedding set. Many of them may already have this information already on their website or can send it to you. See if this aligns with what you want.
Flexibility:
A DJ has a bit more flexibility when it comes to songs and genres. They can judge the crowd to see if the music is getting your friends and family moving. For this reason, consider giving your DJ a “must-play” and the “do-not-play” lists beforehand. This doesn’t mean that you should send them 3 hours’ worth of music that they can’t deviate from but it gives you enough control of the playlist to satisfy your needs.
Versatility:
Look at DJs websites. Some of them spin while others play vinyl and some of them are really great MCs. Evaluate what you want the most and look for DJs who offer that.
Remember that most of the music is for everyone at the reception. Most bands or DJs will start with some older music that appeals to all ages and then move forward with some of the newer songs towards the end of the night.
The music should draw a wide range of ages and personalities onto the dance floor so everyone can enjoy the festivities.
Talk to either a band or a DJ about MC-ing or making announcements for you when any of the scheduled events like the cake-cutting, special dances are happening. They’ll have a much better announcer voice than your uncle Joe.
Conclusion
One of the best parts of a wedding is getting it down on the dancefloor. Your reception entertainment can truly make or break your party. DJs and bands both give a different feel to a wedding, so it’s important to decide which one you’d like for your wedding. A DJ may be a bit more versatile but a band will always get a crowd excited.
