As a pre-party for Bassnectar’s Freestyle Sessions in Colorado, Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom in Denver treated us to an evening with CloZee and CharlestheFirst. The two complimented each other well as they both have a worldly sound.
CloZee went on to perform Saturday for the Dreamtempo night of the Freestyle Sessions and she will be back to support Bassnectar for his massive Return To The Mothership Bass Center X in Hampton, Virginia. Needless to say we wanted to get to know the French DJ that Bassnectar felt so highly about and who touches our spirit with her sound.
After she cooled down from her back to back sold out sets at Cervantes and the Freestyle Sesssions, I reached out to CloZee for an exclusive interview to gain more insight on herself and music.
While you read our exclusive interview with CloZee, listen to her Harmony EP that she tells us more about.
What was your inspiration to write your Harmony EP? Is there a message or emotion you are looking to convey through the EP?
I composed “Harmony” when iI came back home from my Summer Tour 2016, full of inspiration from the amazing festivals I played and attended, and also after my trip in Japan. It is the follow up of my EP “Revolution”, which was more epic, dark and mysterious.
The idea behind “Harmony” is directly related to its name: It is the alliance of many things which creates a coherent and beautiful whole. I wanted to create an harmonious musical story with all kind of sounds and elements (digital, electronic, foley sounds, traditional instruments, voices…), push the mix between world music, organic and bass music.
The artwork was made by Lulu Swallow and reflects the album: The idea of this illustration is therefore to play on the contrasts and alliances between geometric forms / plant-organic patters, just like the music (electronic sounds and traditional instruments), and recreate a peaceful atmosphere by the colors used (green, blue, yellow..)
What has been one of your more memorable performances?
So many awesome shows! They are all unique so it’s hard to choose, but I’d pick just 3 of them: Envision 2016, LiB 2016, Cervantes (Denver) 2017.
Cervantes stands out as a venue because the atmosphere gives you those festie feels and with CloZee’s amazing production that night, it seemed like we were witnessing her at Sonic Bloom’s main stage.
How did you get connected with Bassnectar to perform at his Freestyle event last weekend?
His agency contacted my team and said that Lorin requested to book me. That was kinda surreal.
Do you have any dream collaborations?
Of course! I have so many… Those are pretty reknown artists, but i feel super inspired by Sevdaliza, Rodrigo Y Gabriela, Susheela Raman, FKA Twigs, BANKS, Ludovico Einaudi…. mostly vocalists or instrumentalists.
Do you have any new projects or music in the works?
I have a couple of new tracks and remixes to play for this Summer Tour, but I’ll work on a new album this September, and for a few months. Scarfinger and I will also work on a new EP for CloZinger (our side project).
Do you have a spirit animal? If so, what is it and why?
I honestly don’t know. Never tried to find it, but I can name the falcon, which is a very close animal to me for multiple reasons. I dream about a falcon very often.
Do you have any life mantras?
On a qu’une seule vie. (You Only Live Once)
Now that you know how to say YOLO in French, you have to be sure to witness her world bass next time she is around your town or at a festival because, you only live once. This summer she will be everywhere from O.Z.O.R.A Festival in Hungary and Atmosphere Gathering in Canada to Oregon Eclipse. Check out the rest of her tour dates and locations by clicking here.

The next set we would attend at Cervantes was ill.Gates‘, which properly rounded off the whole Bassnectar Freestyle Sessions experience considering he followed CloZee on that surreal Dreamtempo night. There will be more to come around meeting him and his set.
