As of Tuesday, August 4 – Instagram has banned #EDM.
Is it a response to a changing tide in global sentiment toward dance music? Does Instagram despise EDM? Is the world coming to an end? Actually, the real reason is much less insidious.
Instagram spokesperson Gabe Madway told Time that #EDM was frequently used to tag photos that are in breach of Instagram’s content laws, stating, “In this case, #EDM was being used to share content that violates our guidelines around nudity.”
The length of time for the hashtag blacklist is unknown, but it is possible for tags to return to the platform after the ban is lifted.
The moral of the story? Keep #EDM about EDM.
